Teaching Traveling: Welcome to Lindsay, a teacher, fashion travel blogger, and girlfriend of a prominent travel blogger!
Lindsay, tell us about yourself.
Lindsay: My name is Lindsay Carreiro and I’ve lived in Rhode Island all of my life, 29 (yikes!) years to be exact and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love Rhode Island; I am so passionate I should be working for the tourism board, but that’s another matter. Growing up here has been a great experience. I’ve met some of the best people a girl could meet, as well as my significant other, Mike.
I’ve held many jobs, from being a cashier to customer service, but no job has felt more complete then Teaching. I always knew I liked children BUT what I didn’t realize was that I was actually good with them. I managed to find this out the easy way; working my first “adult” job at my local YMCA. Starting off as a camp counselor and eventually running after school programs was the jumping off point for me career wise.
I’m currently a Head Start Teacher in Providence, RI. This is my third full year teaching but I have been teaching and working with children for 9 years. Head Start is challenging; don’t let those cute little 4 year old faces fool you. These children have it rough and see things that many of us only see in the movies. On the side I have been the woman behind FashionistasTravel.com for the past 2 years. I love writing; especially fashion and also traveling.
TT: What a fascinating mix of interests! Tell us more about your travels.
L: Probably one of the greatest and most interesting trips I have ever taken was to Alaska. My boyfriend Mike and I were fortunate enough to take a small ship cruise to Alaska in the summer of 2010. We were one of 25 people including the crew on board this ship, but it was hands down the best trip either one of us had ever taken. The cruise was approximately 9 days and took us in and out of quite a few inlets surrounding southern Alaska. We took scenic kayak trips, drank fresh glacier water, and even spent some time watching a pod of Killer Whales breech right in front of us.
TT: Very cool! How did you find this travel opportunity?
L: The trip to Alaska was courtesy of Mike who runs Vagabondish.com. The majority of the trips that we take are from the result of his website.
TT: Awesome! How did you find the money to fund this travel?
L: This trip was not completely free; we did have to find our own transportation to Alaska, and what a project that was; 5 airports in 1 day was certainly unforgettable. For major trips such as this one, it usually involves saving on both of our ends and the occasional second job. Not as many nights out, but it’s always worth it in the end.
TT: Tell us one moment from your travels that was particularly powerful.
L: I have quite a few of these memories, but one of the best uplifting memories I have is from Bar Harbor, ME. This past summer we spent a week in Maine and more importantly Bar Harbor, a town that stole my heart. Mike and I spent a day hiking Cadillac Mountain, which might not seem like much, but the views were absolutely breathtaking, and of course spending the time together makes it all worth it. I love hiking with him; it is one of his favorite pastimes, and it really means a lot to me that we are able to do it together. We enjoy finding adventures outdoors whenever we travel.
TT: Lovely! How have your travels impacted you as a teacher?
L: They make me realize just how good I’ve got it. Traveling to different places around the world makes me happy to come back to Rhode Island. Teaching in Providence makes such a difference to these children, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Being a Teacher makes it easier to travel and appreciate how much I enjoy my job.
TT: Well-said. How have your travels impacted you as a person?
L: I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve learned a lot about my relationship; such as we are often cranky after a red-eye flight and that should just be acknowledged in the beginning. You learn to pick your battles when traveling and if this is acknowledged early on you can often laugh about it later. Traveling is such a great way to open up your mind to new and different experiences.
TT: What advice do you have for other teachers who are dreaming of travel?
L: My situation is slightly unique when it comes to being able to travel. I have a boyfriend with a pretty big website that, lucky for us, funds a lot of our travel.
However if this was not the case for me I would recommend getting in touch with PR companies and finding press trips that are available for you. On the side I also do this and was lucky enough to finally go on my very first press trip this past summer, so it is possible.
I would also like to say that traveling doesn’t have to be on a plane or to another country; travel is what you make of it and who you share the adventure with. It is getting to know yourself and what you are capable of.
